Why Some Poker Players Wear Glasses?

While many amateurs simply wear them to emulate their poker heroes, there are some tangible benefits to having shades available at the table. Let's examine the pros and cons in this article.

There are some tells that can be deduced from the eyes. For example, if a player quickly looks at the flop, looks down at his chips, and quickly looks away, the flop most likely helped his cards. On the other side, if a player is keenly studying the flop it probably did not help him and he's trying to figure out some sort of straight combination to no avail. Some also say that a bluffing player usually has dilated pupils. If my eye sight was that good to spot dilated pupils, I believe I would be a quite a talented man.

Next there is also what some people call the intimidation factor. Many players believe that by wearing sunglasses they strike fear in the opponent. Professional poker players like Chris Ferguson come decorated with a black cowboy hat, a long beard, and surely the glasses. Many a times I have been to Texas casinos where you would run into these fully dressed cowboys with their hats, boots, sunglasses, rings , etc etc. It is up to you to feel intimidated. Me, I play my cards.

Also wearing sunglasses makes some players feel secure about themselves. Playing at the WSOP for the first time against the veteran poker players can be quiet intimidating some times. In order to keep sanity some players wear sunglasses to feel more secure and safe from hawkish eyes at the table.

Now there are some negative aspects to wearing sunglasses also. For example you just can't see sometimes while wearing glasses and this may lead you to lose some pots because you misread the cards. I used to wear sunglasses all the time when I first started and after getting called on a couple of bets in which I thought I had a flush but in reality had nothing, decided to ditch them. I look damn intimidating in my native nature.

The choice on whether to wear sunglasses is yours, but hopefully now you have a better understanding of what motivated your opponents' decisions.

Scott's awesome poker byte # 1: Do not wear sunglasses if you are playing at a beginner table. You will end up looking like an idiot and will get called on every bet.
